18 Methyl Eicosanoic Acid (MEA)

There are three types of oils found in the hair cuticle, 18 MEA, creamides, and cholesterol. Hair Consists of around 95% proteins and 2% lipids. 18 MEA is is a substantial portion of the lipids found at the surface of the outer cuticle and provides hydrophobicity to the outer hair surface. These lipids are on the outside of each cuticle to protect the surface and give hair its smoothness and slip.

Hydrophobicity

Hydrophobicity means it repels water. Since 18-MEA’s hydrophobiclayer sorrounds the outer layer of the cuticle it helps keep the inner hydrophilic (water lover) protein’s from losing moisture causing our hair to stay moisturized and hydrated.

The 18 MEA layer helps keep moisture locked in your hair but also repels moisture from entering. This layer presents as sleek and shiny hhair that prevents damage to the cuticle. Depleted 18-MEA leaves hair tangled, dry, brittle, and aged.

Once you deplete your your hair 18 MEA it’s gone forever. While you can’t replace this naturally occuring lipid, a few companies have created a modified of 18 MEA to help restore damaged hair and increase hydrophobicity.
